Curiosity is an innate part of human nature, from infancy to old age. It is curiosity that drive human beings to question and thereafter discover inventions that benefit us today – electricity, automobiles, the internet, … the list is endless.
Although we may not be creating the next new invention, there are many positive benefits of being curious in our daily lives.
Breeding an active mind
People who are curious always keep an open and active mind. They refuse to accept things or explanations as they are, and always seek to find new or better ways of doing things. The mind is like a muscle which becomes stronger through regular exercise, and curiosity acts as regular exercise for the brain.
Recognising new ideas and opportunities
When you are constantly curious, you will always be on the lookout for new ideas and opportunities, such that when a new idea comes, you can recognise it easily. Without curiosity, you may miss new ideas as your mind is not prepared to recognise them.
Bringing excitement
Curious people always find new things that attract their attention. As a result, their lives are neither dull nor routine. They are adventurous - always finding new things to do and new people to meet.
There are many ways to cultivate and experience curiosity in our daily lives. Many of these ways can be easily applied with a little effort.
Asking questions
Go back to the days when you were a child. Do you remember asking a lot of questions whenever you see or read something that aroused your curiosity or interest? Ask “how?”, “why?”, or “what if?” Asking questions helps you to discover things that are not obvious. It also helps you to challenge old beliefs, and to keep an open mind for new possibilities and new ways of doing things.
For example, there may be opportunities in the workplace where some administrative hassles could be streamlined or eliminated completely. By questioning whether certain steps are necessary, you can help contribute to a more efficient and productive work place.
Play!
When we were young, we tended to be more curious and excited about the world around us, as every experience is fresh and new. As we grow older and the routine and stress of daily living set in, we tend to forget what it feels like to be curious and excited about the world around us.
One way to rediscover our curiosity and passion for living is to take time out to play. This means trying out new hobbies or activities, taking a vacation to see new places, experiencing new cultures, or simply reading up on topics which you may not be usually keen on. ‘Playing’ helps you to explore and opens up your mind to a world of endless possibilities.
Be proactive
Curious people do not sit around and wish for things to fall into their laps. Instead, they take the initiative to seek out new ideas and innovative ways of doing things. For example, they would actively seek out and attend various networking activities to meet new people, learn new things, and be exposed to different thoughts, ideas, and ways of thinking that they do not usually encounter on a day-to-day basis.
Another way to stay curious is to keep in touch with the latest global news and trends. Consider how and why things are happening in a certain way and form your own thoughts and conclusions, instead of accepting things for what they are.
Being curious not only increases your knowledge, you will also become more creative as you will be able to link seemingly unrelated ideas to form new ones.
Taking an interest in new things that inspire you and fitting them into your daily life is the first step to becoming a more curious person. So don’t hesitate, take that first step today!
