We want the best for our family – quality food, a comfortable home, and financial security. Why should physical health be out of the picture? We should place the same importance on fitness too - have a fit and healthy family
Here are some ways to help you enjoy activities as a family and build family fitness. You may build on the ideas for other activities that suit your lifestyle.
Relax and recharge
After a hard day's work, go for a physical and mental break. Join your family for a walk before or after dinner, play or cycle in the park, go for a swim, or play a game. It helps to clear your mind off work too. This is particularly helpful if your child is preparing for examinations - a short outdoor activity can do wonders to relieve his tired mind.
Use the stairs
If you live on the second floor or above, make it a habit to use the stairs at least part of the way. Set a challenge in among family members to find out who climbed the most number of stairs each week. Soon you may even want to try a vertical marathon.
Sunday morning surprise
Set aside one Sunday morning every fortnight or every month for a surprise family activity. Go to the Botanic Gardens or the nearest beach. Throw a Frisbee, fly a kite, or kick a ball. The change in routine will excite the whole family and the experience will leave you refreshed and revitalised.
Participate and play
Don't just watch your favourite game on TV. Try it out yourself! Join a group at the community centre, at work or a club and learn to play the sport. You'll get fit and know more about the sport at the same time. It could even be a sport the whole family can enjoy together.
You are never too old, too fat or too clumsy to learn a new game or sport. If you feel shy about joining strangers, ask your family to teach you. Your child would love to be 'teacher' for a change!
Learn ethnic activities
Traditional dances or other ethnic activities such as lion dance, silat, or silambam are enjoyable and educational. Learn more about your culture and come to appreciate your roots as a family. Join classes or groups at your community centre.
Fun and fitness at parties
Next time you have a family gathering or party, focus on the activity not just the food. Have games like badminton, volleyball, a tug-of-war or a traditional sport like 'Capteh' for the guests. The possibilities are endless. And it will really spice up your party.
Lessons in nature life
A visit to Pulau Ubin, the Zoo, the Bird Park or a walk through Bukit Timah Nature Reserve can bring classroom lessons to life for your child. Remember to make healthier food choices when you pack that picnic basket to bring along.
